Kobolds
Kobolds are small, reptilian humanoids standing 3-4 feet tall, with scaled skin, slitted eyes, snouts, and slender tails used primarily for balance. Kobolds share a connection to the same elemental Aetheric forces that empower the Dragon Gods. Coloration varies predictably by Aether type: earthy browns and grays, fiery reds and oranges, watery blues and greens, airy whites and pale yellows, or the verdant hues of nature-attuned individuals.
Kobolds are clever and creative, though not as naturally inclined toward abstract innovation as humans. They won't be leading any technological revolutions, but they prove remarkably adept at finding practical applications for existing tools and techniques. Their small stature makes them poorly suited for heavy labor, but well-matched to detailed work, domestic service, and magical assistance.
Magical Aptitude
Kobolds inherit a singular elemental archetype from one of their parents. They possess some degree of natural magical aptitude associated with their element, but cannot obtain magic outside of it. It is generally weak, especially compared to the heights of other races' magic.
Their magical aptitudes and residence in strong Aether environments makes Kobolds good candidates for Weavers. Their magic tends to lack the raw power needed for combat sorcery but can handle the subtle environmental channeling that Weaving requires. Where no established Circle exists nearby, Kobolds sometimes form their own informal gatherings to practice and teach their elemental work.
Reproduction
Kobolds lay eggs in small clutches of 2-4, which hatch after approximately three to four months in proper conditions. Eggs require sufficient Aether of their designated types to develop. Female Kobolds can hold fertilized eggs internally in embryonic stasis for extended periods, releasing them only when they sense favorable Aether conditions nearby.
Life and Adaptation
Kobolds typically establish smaller, close-knit communities a little outside of towns and settlements, maintaining connections to broader civilization while remaining close to the Aether sources they need. Their communities gravitate toward areas with high Aetheric saturation where their innate magic is most viable and their eggs can safely hatch. This draws them toward regions also favored by Weaver Circles.
Fire Kobolds run warm and tolerate heat, favoring desert regions and volcanic areas. Earth Kobolds often settle in with Dwarven mountain communities. Air Kobolds thrive in high-altitude settlements and windswept peaks. Water Kobolds handle cold and moisture comfortably, spread along coastlines and big lakes. Nature Kobolds cluster near Elven colonies and enchanted forests, finding natural alliance with Druid Circles.
Poaching & Slavery
Kobolds are vulnerable targets for slavery, farming, and poaching operations. Their bodies yield valuable alchemical components, and their meat is a great delicacy due to its Aetheric attunement. Consuming Kobold meat can augment magical channeling and sorcery of the related Aether types. Nearly 5% of the Kobold population falls victim to poaching or capture; a devastating number even if it doesn't threaten the race's survival.
Unfortunately, Kobolds lack the resources and strength to change their circumstances through force. Instead, they persist through caution, community, quiet networks of mutual aid, and the genuine value they offer to those who see them as partners rather than resources.
