Direkin
Direkin are Demonkin that have received a Devil's Mark that transforms them and elevates their power. Most Direkin were chosen from the Nyzari, the elite Demonkin that are capable of channeling Miasma.
Demon Lord
Demon Lords are Direkin who received the Devil's Mark from Vorax, Devil of Predation, granting immortality and power in exchange for consuming the hearts of others. Upon receiving Vorax's mark, Demon Lords are fueled by an insatiable bloodlust. Consuming hearts grants extraordinary healing and progressively enhances their strength, speed, reflexes, and resilience over time. Age directly translates to increased power and size; the oldest Demon Lords rival Devils themselves in physical prowess.
As they grow stronger, Demon Lords develop discriminating tastes. Powerful hearts, particularly from those with strong auras or magical abilities, provide greater satisfaction. This escalating hunger drives them to seek dangerous prey, including rival demons and even Vorax himself, though all such challengers have failed. The most ancient hunt members of the elite Titan forces, considering them the ultimate prize.
Demon Lord Roles
Demon Lords establish strongholds throughout the shadowlands outside Endros, commanding vast armies and leading military operations against Fairkin territories. They serve as Vorax's generals and enforcers. Ancient Demon Lords often command younger ones that rule smaller domains, and occasionally vie for dominance in devastating civil wars. Vorax views such conflicts as natural selection, ensuring only the strongest maintain command positions.
Despite internal power struggles, Demon Lords represent a constant threat to humanity. They regularly clash with the Titan Order in contested territories, with battles that have shaped the geopolitical landscape for centuries.
Doppelganger
Doppelgangers are recipients of the Devil's Mark of Thespia, the Devil of Mimicry, capable of mimicry. They are tasked as deep-cover agents, capable of infiltrating various settlements and power structures. Though most are deployed within rival demonic societies, Thespia always maintains a handful of operatives integrated within Fairkin communities. These infiltrators excel at assassinating and replacing key figures in enemy organizations, allowing them to influence policy, sow discord, destabilize institutions, orchestrate conflicts, incite wars, or sabotage defenses from positions of authority and trust.
Doppelganger Powers
By consuming a victim's heart, Doppelgangers can physically transform between their demonic and mimicked form. The transformation takes several minutes of concentration, and grants access to the victim's memories, skills, mannerisms, and magical powers. However, they cannot replicate one's Anima powers, which are intrinsically bound to the soul itself. Consuming a new heart causes them to permanently lose their previous form along with any memories and skills they haven't deliberately reinforced.
Doppelgangers in mimicked form have weakened control of their demonic abilities. Their demonic instincts, memories, and core nature become clouded and partially suppressed. This immersion of emotions and values can cause fleeting moments of identity confusion, sometimes "losing themselves" in their adopted persona. They may develop conflicted loyalties when mimicking victims with extraordinary moral character and powerful emotional connections.
Kaijin
Kaijins are notorious for their ability to outsmart and outmaneuver all other Demons, having received the Devil's Mark of Calibra, the Devil of Details. Unlike other Devil's Marks, Calibra's mark is primarily cognitive. It amplifies and refines existing talents rather than imposing a specific transformation pattern.
Kaijins are often organized into small cells of 3-7 Kaijins with complementary skill sets, assembled to address specific strategic objectives. Cells may be tasked with complex engineering and artificing responsibilities, coordinated war strategies, effective city and resource management, reverse-engineering Aethertech, infiltration of other demonic cities, establishing and fortifying new defensive centers, or serving as elite tactical combat units that represent a grave threat to the Fairkin.
Kaijin Powers
Kaijins gain high human-level intelligence, potentially reaching genius level in their pre-existing specialties. With an obsessive attention to detail, bordering on compulsive, they gain an ability to maintain focus almost indefinitely. Information processing speeds increase dramatically, allowing them to learn, analyze, anticipate, and adapt at remarkable rates. Within their fields of expertise, they acquire an almost supernatural perception of patterns, weaknesses, and efficiencies. This is especially apparent in sorcerers, who can develop powers well beyond the typical Nyzari.
Selection Criteria
Calibra selects Kaijins not based on a single archetype but on their potential for excellence in any discipline that serves his grand designs. He favors Demons who already demonstrate unusual aptitude or creativity within demonic society, such as Nyzari Sorcerers, Calcifiers, Harvesters, and competent tacticians. Most recipients come from the Nyzari, though the Sundered are also considered remarkable talents.
Mark Manifestation
The Kaijin's mark appears as a precise geometric pattern of thin, infernal lines that form on the recipient's forehead, often extending down the neck or across shoulders. It may lightly radiate when the Marked is engaged in sorcery, complex problem-solving, or deploying their expertise.
Wendigo
Wendigo are Direkin who received the Devil's Mark from Osmos, Devil of Assimilation, capable of absorbing the thoughts, skills, and powers of victims by consuming their hearts. Upon receiving their Mark, Wendigo transform into larger, more powerful forms with enhanced strength, speed, and resilience, but experience profound incompleteness that drives them to seek their first victim.
When feeding on a victim, Wendigo undergo dramatic metamorphosis, acquiring their memories, skills, powers, and some of their more advantageous physical traits and characteristics. Despite these changes, they retain demonic attributes like obsidian skin and horns, creating a disturbing hybrid appearance between their original self and their victims. Their first victim is crucial, as Wendigo adopt most traits from this initial consumption.
Wendigo can assimilate two or three additional victims before reaching completion, with each successive consumption adding fewer traits. Once they are "complete," the emptiness subsides. Most are instructed to target victims with extraordinary abilities, though many struggle to resist consuming Fairkin. Assimilation creates complex psychological dynamics. Consuming holy individuals may develop unexpected empathy or remorse, while assimilating malevolent beings amplifies darker tendencies.
Wendigo Roles
Osmos selects candidates who demonstrate adaptability and cunning. Wendigo serve as special operatives, particularly dangerous when they've assimilated Fairkin. Through absorbed memories, they gain intimate understanding of enemy societies and lead specialized strike teams or forces using unexpected tactics.
Succubi
Succubi are Direkin who received the Devil's Mark from Lusia, Devil of Vices, capable of emitting supernatural pheromones that harmonize with Umbral Miasma to induce powerful emotional responses. Demonkin are essentially helpless to resist, willing to cater to nearly every demand. Fairkin resist more effectively, but struggle when susceptible to addictions and vices. Even disciplined Fairkin find direct confrontation extremely difficult; intentionally harming a Succubus requires strong emotional resolve.
Succubi initially influence through physical proximity, but intensify their control with contact. Lingering touch transfers subtle Umbral Miasma that strengthens dependency and obsession. They gain pleasure from provoking strong emotions but can redirect their influence at will. Succubi avoid direct combat, instead luring victims into compromising positions that make them vulnerable.
Succubus Roles
Lusia selects candidates who demonstrate exceptional charisma and emotional intelligence. Most Succubi serve as royalty within Lusia's kingdom, governing territories or acting as ambassadors. Others infiltrate cities to tempt captive Fairkin into revealing intelligence or becoming Warlocks, or spur organizations into action. Each cultivates their own cult, strengthening bonds with devoted Demonkin.
When infiltrating demon societies, Succubi operate openlyโtheir presence is intentionally visible and welcomed. Demonkin flock to offer knowledge or service for attention and acknowledgement, making this an effective technique for Lusia to stay informed of rival kingdoms.
