Beastkin
Beastkin are animal-aspected humanoids descended from Varga, God of Beasts. Each lineage is associated with a family of animals or bestial archetypes that shape their appearance, instincts, and natural talents. The earliest generations are fully anthropomorphic and known as Vargans, while later generations are often Softclaws, appearing mostly Human with pronounced animal traits. Vargans commonly address one another as brother or sister regardless of exact lineage or generation.
Thousands of Vargans live in the Vargan Wilds, where their communities remain closer to the primal life Varga prefers. Varga takes several mates and fathers roughly fifteen to twenty children each year, choosing their lineage according to the needs of his tribes. Beastkin are, on average, physically superior to Humans and many non-Beastkin races, especially among Vargans. Vargans always produce Beastkin children, though traits may be less pronounced when paired with Humans. Female Softclaws always give birth to Beastkin children, while male Softclaws have roughly even odds of fathering a Beastkin child with a Human.
The major Beastkin lineages are Drakyns, Felaris, Lupins, Pikas, and Satyrs.
Social Challenges
Beastkin face widespread racism in Human-dominated regions, ranging from casual exclusion to open harassment and tolerated violence. "Demihuman" and "beast" are common slurs, and assaults against Beastkin may be ignored or weakly punished in many jurisdictions. Many avoid the worst oppression by living in Vargan territory, Skywood, or Elven colonies within Silven.
Outside safer communities, Beastkin often struggle to find respectable work beyond mercenary service, adventuring, guard labor, or domestic service. Their physical talents make them well suited to dangerous professions, and such work can pay well, but they are frequently treated as expendable or underpaid compared to non-Beastkin peers.
Drakyns
Drakyns are dragon-aspected Beastkin with subtle scales, hornlets or crest-like features, graceful forms, and a controlled physical presence. They move with fluid precision when active, but can become unnervingly still when watching, waiting, or negotiating. Some Drakyns carry strong elemental alignment that enhances sorcery and may be reflected in their coloration, though not all Drakyns are elemental. Sandy, diamond-patterned Drakyns often lean toward Fire or Earth, while green or dappled Drakyns may show stronger Nature affinity.
Drakyns are private, self-directed, and slow to trust, but they rarely betray those who have genuinely earned their respect. Their pride is less communal than most Beastkin lineages, often expressing itself through personal excellence, professional reliability, and carefully maintained public personas. Many become adventurers, mercenaries, information brokers, precision artisans, or quiet specialists whose patience and attention to detail make them valuable in difficult work.
Felaris
Felaris are feline Beastkin with sleek builds, expressive ears and tails, sharp senses, and remarkable agility. They excel at scouting, stalking, observation, balance, and precise movement, especially in dim light. Their culture often values subtle decoration, carefully maintained territories, personal curiosities, and gifts given as signs of respect. Young Felaris commonly learn through play-hunting games, and many appreciate direct gestures of approval from friends, family, mentors, or respected superiors.
Felaris have formed lasting alliances with Lupins and other Beastkin in Sanctum. Though their social habits vary widely by lineage, many treat territory and possessions with quiet seriousness, expecting others to understand when entry, touch, or familiarity requires permission.
Pikas
Pikas are rabbit-aspected Beastkin known for speed, agility, powerful legs, and expressive ears that can reveal emotional nuance. Their ears rise, freeze, angle, or twitch in ways other Pikas read instinctively. They are often slightly shorter than Humans, with small puffy tails and soft fur patterns that may cover the back, arms, and legs while transitioning to smoother skin along the front. Common colors include white, gray, tan, honey-gold, and rare silver tones.
Pikas move with a graceful, bounding gait and can deliver kicks with force disproportionate to their size. They value close relationships and often form small circles of trusted friends. Many sit with their feet tucked beneath them, knees forward and feet below, a posture that feels natural to their build.
Satyrs
Satyrs are horned Beastkin with slender, graceful builds, strong endurance, and exceptional mobility. Vargan Satyrs may possess digitigrade legs that give them a springing gait, and many have backward-curving horns that follow the shape of the skull. They are fast, athletic, and capable of maintaining a steady pace for hours, making them natural runners, messengers, travelers, and skirmishers.
Satyrs often maintain traditions of peaceful travel, visiting homes that welcome others of their kind along long routes. Some synchronize their walking motions with companions as a sign of solidarity, turning shared movement into a quiet expression of trust and belonging.
Lupins
Lupins are canine Beastkin with expressive ears and tails, heightened senses, and strong social instincts. Their appearance, build, and temperament vary by lineage: wolf Lupins tend to be larger and stronger, fox Lupins smaller and more agile, with other canine lines falling between or beyond those patterns. They possess enhanced hearing, smell, night vision, and natural talent for tracking, pursuit, and coordinated movement.
Pack bonds are central to Lupin life. Loyalty and identity run deep, often forming lifelong attachments that shape family, friendship, hunting, and leadership. Lupin packs usually favor their own kind, but cross-lineage and cross-species companions can earn genuine trust. Their hunts rely on coordination, flanking, and shared instincts, while leadership may be determined through social influence, proven competence, or nonlethal combat. Lupins also maintain a simple language of howls, growls, barks, and other vocalizations that can carry meaning across distance.
