Sutra

Sutra, Goddess of the Weave

Sutra is a petite Elven Goddess whose magic treats fabric, matter, and Aether as patterns that can be woven, repaired, altered, or unraveled. She is creative and whimsical in presentation but exacting in practice. She believes that Endros could be strengthened if it worked more directly with the Astralei. Despite her immense power and reputation, Sutra seems content to focus on her craft rather than pursue greater political influence.

Unlike most Gods, Sutra does not bestow Sacraments on mortals. She invests divine essence into objects, garments, relics, materials, and Wonders, producing valuable creations that endure through time. In her workshop, she is surrounded by cloth, mannequins, and half-finished garments stronger than many armors.

Power and Domain

Sutra's mastery lies in understanding magic as patterns to be woven, unraveled, and altered. Her magic blends the powers of Weaving and enchantment, rather than the Sorcery wielded by most Gods. It allows her to operate on principles beyond conventional understanding and perceive magical constructs in ways that others cannot. Her enchantments follow seemingly paradoxical principles, utilizing recursive patterns that even the most talented Dwarven artificers find impossible to comprehend or reverse-engineer.

Though not primarily a combatant, Sutra possesses remarkable combat abilities. Her instinctual weaving magic lets her manipulate active magic directly, effectively neutralizing spells. She can transform seemingly harmless threads or garments into formidable weapons, binding and incapacitating opponents in unbreakable weaves in ways few could anticipate or recover from.

Regalia and Relics

Sutra is best known for Regalia: relic-class magical outfits made from Starweave. Regalia bestows magical power to its attuned user and is capable of transforming into variant forms at the owner's will. It is enchanted for power, beauty, durability, self-repair, self-cleaning, self-drying, and temperature control. These garments are awarded to the Anointed, platinum-rank adventurers, and other figures whose station justifies the cost.

Though her magical garments and equipment are highly sought after by nobility, Sutra's work with the Adventurer's Guild means her most important creations are reserved for high-ranking adventurers. As a hobby, Sutra creates clothing for Fairies, resulting in an excess of Fairy Raiments. All Fairies are able to own one of Sutra's outfits; a feat that not even many nobles can claim.

Her work supports many specialized relics and institutions:

  • Adventurer's Regalia marks elite adventurers and gives them durable, adaptive combat clothing.
  • Hunter's Regalia, more powerful upgrades to the Adventurer's Regalia, given to Artemis's Hunters.
  • Anointed Regalia, including for Maidens, Saints, Sirens, Maestros, Starborns, and others.
  • Archivist Gems, which require Sutra's surgical and enchantment expertise.
  • Fairy Raiments, one of her personal obsessions. Most Fairies have outfits made by her.
  • World Wonders, which often require her enchantment work alongside Aedron.

History with the Astralei

Sutra taught the Astralei for centuries during the Second Age, contributing to a number of magical revolutions in Weaving, Sorcery, and Aethertech that shaped their civilization. Her distinctive approach has produced artifacts of legendary power, from the renowned Adventurer's Regalia to the World Wonders. Many scholars believe she improved upon the design of the Astralei Portals, potentially making her a lynchpin in the network's creation and maintenance. The complex integration with leylines falls directly within her domain of expertise. There is also speculation of her involvement in the Codex.

Adonis remains one of Sutra's most important alliances. Adonis sees patterns of consequence, while Sutra weaves patterns into useful forms. Starborn emissaries regularly visit her in Skywood. Concordia, Goddess of Pacts, also works closely with Sutra as part of her alliance network with Adonis. The three of them have a mysterious but professional relationship built on carefully negotiated mutual interests.
