Warlock Clans
Warlock clans are organizations of Fairkin who serve demonic interests through bargains, coercion, or the pursuit of power. Most directly or indirectly support the Caballum, drawing on its black markets, smuggling routes, forbidden lore, and protection. Some operate openly in demonic territory, while others conceal their allegiance behind businesses, households, or secret societies.
Organization and Recruitment
Clans recruit through criminal networks, promises of wealth and power, threats, and forced conversion. Captives and compromised associates can become established members over time, while children raised in demonic strongholds may grow up accepting Warlock service as ordinary life. A clan's shared trade or purpose often develops from the work its patron requires.
Leaders commonly bear Patron Stakes that connect them to a Devil or powerful Direkin. Less corrupted members maintain contacts in Fairkin society, while heavily staked elders and specialists tend to reside in Shadowlands or remote strongholds. Clans also employ brokers, servants, and other associates who may know little of their demonic allegiance. Bane provides refuge for exposed Warlocks and supports workshops, trading operations, and the Syndicate's leadership.
Dark Anvil
Dark Anvil serves Calibra through Aethertech acquisition, technical work, and support for his Kaijin. Its concealed operations around Haven arrange purchases, diverted shipments, and the movement of skilled captives into the Darklands. Its workshops study and maintain acquired equipment, supplying devices and technical knowledge for demonic use.
Members enter through captivity, coercion, fear, or offers of power and protection. Engineers, artificers, and other specialists become part of the clan through years of enforced work and dependence on Calibra's resources. Established members train successors and manage new captives, developing a lasting community around the work demanded of them. Public repair and secondhand businesses conceal its procurement network.
The Borrowed House
The Borrowed House supports Thespia's Doppelgangers through operations in the Aegis and Ironwood shadowlands, around Bane and Thorne. Members research prospective identities, arrange access to targets, compromise household staff, and conceal the disappearance of those selected for replacement. Most of its agents are Fairkin collaborators who can maintain a presence where demonic infiltrators would face greater scrutiny.
Once a Doppelganger assumes an identity, the clan manages correspondence, appointments, servants, and explanations for absences. Remote residences provide retreats when Prana exposure forces an infiltrator to withdraw. Successful replacements depend on this support, and investigators may uncover the surrounding handlers before finding the demon they serve.
The Claw
The Claw recruits for Avarice through the Syndicate, cultivating ambitious merchants, minor nobles, and wealthy households. Its public circles offer introductions, investment opportunities, private auctions, and discreet favors. Each success grants access to more profitable opportunities that require increasingly serious crimes.
Members accumulate evidence of their customers' complicity, making withdrawal costly or dangerous. Those with useful wealth, influence, or connections are eventually offered demonic protection and continued prosperity in exchange for binding service. Established associates help cultivate new prospects, turning commercial relationships and social patronage into a supply of Warlock recruits.
The Unshackled
The Unshackled serves Avarice by recruiting among the poor, exploited, and inhumanely treated. Its agents offer relief from crushing debts, abusive employers, dangerous homes, or powerful people against whom their victims have little recourse. Wealth, protection, and demonic power promise an escape from circumstances that ordinary appeals have failed to change.
The clan also helps create or worsen the hardships it offers to resolve, working through creditors, employers, landlords, and compromised officials. Recruits may never learn that their benefactors helped arrange their desperation. Those who accept Avarice's bargains gain tangible improvements in their lives, but become bound servants expected to support the network and draw others into its protection.
Heirkeepers
The Heirkeepers identify and cultivate exceptional bloodlines for Osmos and his Wendigos. Genealogists, tutors, physicians, and marriage brokers track promising families, sponsor education, and encourage combinations of desirable traits. A family may receive support for generations before the clan selects an individual worth delivering for assimilation.
Members develop considerable expertise in recognizing and nurturing talent, taking professional pride in the quality of their acquisitions. Beneficiaries usually know only a generous patron or scholarly foundation, while lesser associates may be unaware of the eventual purpose. Disappearances among exceptional pupils and carefully arranged family connections can reveal the clan's long cultivation of its victims.
The Reapers
The Reapers supply the Syndicate with stolen Aethertech and forbidden ritual and alchemical materials. Their hunters kill mages for their equipment and valuable remains, poach protected Fey, and forcibly harvest Druidis from Dryads. Calibra's and Osmos's networks provide buyers for selected devices, materials, and specimens.
Scouts and brokers work among reagent dealers, expedition outfitters, and secondhand merchants. Hunting teams select isolated targets beyond settlements, concealing murders as disappearances in dangerous terrain. Precise commissions guide their work, and goods pass through intermediaries before reaching buyers. Recovered Druidis may still preserve a victim's memories, making stolen shipments valuable to both investigators and surviving Dryads.
Blackwake
Blackwake is a pirate Warlock clan serving Avarice, linking surface crews with hidden Merfolk communities. Tidewalkers coordinate between captains and aquatic members, organizing reconnaissance, attacks on underwater escorts, boarding, cargo recovery, and escape. The Syndicate supplies shipping intelligence, provisions, and buyers, while captured Aethertech passes into Calibra's supply networks.
Surface captains depend on Merfolk support to conduct successful raids, while aquatic members rely on the clan's markets and resources. Protection of hidden communities competes with the pursuit of profitable prizes, and naval pressure forces members to abandon refuges and rebuild their arrangements. Blackwake favors selective attacks and concealed routes, avoiding sustained engagements with major naval forces.
The Unwithering
The Unwithering offers demonic augmentation to people seeking strength, resilience, and longer lives, including injured fighters and veterans afraid of becoming vulnerable again. Members embrace repairs and bodily alterations as improvements, supporting one another through increasingly visible corruption. Lich, Chimeran, and Vampiric Stakes provide different enhancements, each with costs that deepen dependence on the clan.
Its Darklands faction serves Calibra, performing dangerous salvage, field trials, and assault work under Kaijin oversight. Its Ironwood faction serves Avarice, receiving shelter and augmentation in exchange for binding obligations to protect routes and holdings near Thorne. The factions share practical knowledge and contacts for acquiring stakes and supplies. Vampiric members maintain collective blood procurement and discreet lodging, pooling wealth and services to sustain their strength and longevity.
The Ninth Chair
The Ninth Chair is a Warlock-led secret cult serving Umbra through government infiltration. Its broader membership includes officials, clerks, minor nobles, and ambitious civic figures who believe the society preserves hidden wisdom and advances deserving members. Most participants know they exchange illicit favors and conceal wrongdoing, but remain unaware of the Warlock leadership and demonic purpose.
The inner circle turns Umbra's objectives into ordinary assignments: influence appointments, delay repairs, redirect funding, or discredit witnesses. Loyalty to the cult justifies these acts, while shared secrets make departure dangerous. The Ninth Chair itself represents a concealed authority that most members never meet. Investigations can expose extensive civic corruption before revealing the demonic interests guiding it.
