The Syndicate
The Syndicate is a clandestine, demonic black market operated by Warlock clans serving the Caballum. Alongside stolen goods, forbidden lore, trafficking, and assassination, it offers legitimate goods such as food, tools, and materials through familiar merchants at attractive prices. Its concealed demonic backing allows customers to fund the Devils without ever approaching a recognized criminal contact.
Leadership and Organization
The Syndicate's Warlock leaders are bound to Avarice by supernatural agreements, while layers of brokers and handlers conceal their authority and demonic allegiance. Bane serves as their base of operations. Umbra's intelligence and Thespia's infiltrators help compromise useful people and protect the network, supplying the Caballum with wealth, secrets, and recruits.
Concealed Commerce
Warlocks who can pass among Fairkin arrange purchases and deliveries through businesses, smugglers, and unwitting carriers. Goods change hands before reaching respectable sellers, obscuring their origin and beneficiaries. Even ordinary goods become illicit through their demonic backing. Trusted criminal contacts provide access to darker trades, including poaching, kidnapping, and demonic supplies.
Recruitment and Compromise
Access to the Syndicate's darker markets is cultivated gradually. Customers may begin by purchasing scarce goods, securing advantageous deals, or employing discreet intermediaries. Those seeking greater wealth, influence, or forbidden power are introduced to increasingly criminal opportunities. Access depends on demonstrated complicity: participation gives the network evidence of crimes that could ruin the customer if exposed.
Brokers encourage useful customers to deepen their involvement, offering rewards while accumulating leverage. A customer might finance a theft, knowingly purchase harvested materials, arrange a disappearance, or help conceal an operation. Their profits, associates, and reputation become entangled with the network. By the time they understand the extent of its criminality, withdrawal may mean losing their livelihood, facing prosecution, or provoking people who possess evidence against them.
Selected individuals are eventually introduced to the Syndicate's Warlock leadership. Demonic bargains offer protection, continued prosperity, or the power to survive the circumstances they have entered. Refusal can bring exposure or retaliation, making Warlock conversion an act of desperation as often as ambition. Avarice's binding agreements secure valuable recruits, while Warlock clans absorb them into operations suited to their skills and connections. Many lesser participants remain unaware of the demonic leadership, serving the Syndicate without becoming Warlocks themselves.
Aethertech Acquisition
Avarice acquires large quantities of Aethertech for Calibra through concealed purchases, secondhand trade, theft, and diverted shipments. Brokers and carriers obscure its destination before transferring it to Calibra's Warlock and Kaijin supply networks. Intact devices allow Calibra and his specialists to study Fairkin technology and corrupt it into Miasmatech, turning Endros's industry into demonic strength.
The Adventurer's Guild struggles to trace these arrangements because individual transactions can appear legitimate and participants often know only their immediate contacts. Exposing a courier or purchaser may uncover one shipment while leaving the Warlock organizers and their Devil patron concealed.
