Navy

The Navy, based in Meris, protects Endros's borders against demonic threats from the sea. Merfolk are the primary defenders against aquatic demons, but their sacrifices in the ongoing war remain largely unknown to surface dwellers, creating a sense of unappreciated duty that sometimes colors diplomatic relations.

  • The largest and most powerful fleet in the world by a wide margin.
  • A deeply respected symbol of the Merfolk.
  • Protects humanity's borders along the sea.
  • Also serves as a powerful deterrent against smuggling and piracy.
  • Has a larger percentage of submarines and amphibious ships than strictly surface-bound ships.
  • Its surface-bound ships are primarily responsible for trade and diplomacy with other major ports.
  • Its submarines are responsible for the bulk of combat, though they may have luxury aspects to them.

Long-distance communication by sea is considered part of the Navy's domain. Ursula, the Goddess of the Sea, and Nautilus the God of Water, can relay and interpret underwater messages across hundreds of miles. This makes rapid communication extremely valuable for military use. Unassisted sound can travel roughly a mile per second underwater, and when infused with high level Water magic can be raised to over three miles per second, making it very expedient.

Broadcasting short-range messages underwater is usually fine for quick, targeted purposes, but long-range messages that reach far across the sea are restricted to those who have been approved for its use. This includes high-ranking navy officers, certain postmasters of the Courier's Guild, and priests affiliated with Ursula and Nautilus. Attempting to send long-range messages through the sea is generally considered at one's own peril if they weren't given authority to do so.

When an alert message is broadcast, it may stir certain activity, reactions, or communication. It is common to receive replies from postmasters serving in nearby regions, or even for Ursula or Nautilus to respond directly if they are within a reasonable distance and the message contains information that warrants action.

The Navy uses the same ranking system as the Adventurer's Guild, though the emblems and insignia appear different.

Ranks:

  • Bluecoats: Bronze and Silver-ranked.
    • Wear dark blue uniforms with white accents.
  • Marines: Gold and Platinum-ranked. Elite sailors. Significantly harder training than Bluecoats.
    • Wear fine blue and white Raiments with gold trimming, including a fine blue cape.

Classes:

  • Sailors: Pilot ships and submarines, either directly or as support, particularly for the purposes of aquatic combat.
  • Gunners: Weapons experts that operate weapons stations and artillery support during aquatic combat.
  • Officers: Responsible for maintaining command on the vessel. Only available to Marines.
    • The role of officer is often a secondary class.
  • Soldiers: Participate in off-ship aquatic combat. Outfitted with scaled armor and piercing weapons.
  • Stormweavers: Aquatic sorcerers, often critical for dangerous missions.
    • Consists almost exclusively of Deepwater Merfolk.

Legendary Submarines

The navy controls multiple submarines of legend, enchanted with powerful Aethertech and built with top-class alchemical materials. Their water displacement magic allows rapid descent, ascent, turning, and acceleration. Aside from the Tidebreaker, each submarine specializes in military use against demonic threats. Its most famous submarine, the Kraken Heart, is considered arguably the most devastating weapon in Endros' possession.

Kraken Heart

The Kraken Heart is the fastest, most dangerous submarine in the world. It is the navy's most prized weapon. Somewhat resembling a squid's body, it has three giant tentacle-like appendages powered by magic. It is officially recognized as a "World Wonder" project that took 60 years, constructed exclusively by elite Aethertech engineering teams with Aedron's direct involvement.

Only piloted by sufficiently powerful deepwater merfolk, the submarine emphasizes speed, stealth, and surgical strike precision. Its rotation and acceleration are so fast that, despite stabilizing enchantments, they can be disorienting to untrained passengers. Its tentacles allow for an extreme turning radius, and are capable of gripping and applying extreme crushing force. The primary weapon is famously named "Poseidon's Trident," whose damage output is so severe that there have been fewer than seven demonic threats known to survive a single direct hit.

The submarine's core body is 30 meters long and 10 meters in diameter. Its three 'tentacles' reach an additional 35 meters, totaling 65 meters at full length. The tentacles are piloted separately from the main body and considered the most prestigious piloted position in Endros.

The Tidebreaker

The Tidebreaker is a luxury submarine designed with hybrid environments suited to both aquatic and non-aquatic species. It can be boarded easily from land or sea with the appropriate affinity, serving as a diplomatic convoy with the merfolk. Its magic facilitates movement without pressurization issues and allows air to be extracted and recycled from the water.

The submarine is 20 meters in length, 7 meters in diameter, and has two decks that average roughly 3 meters high. The upper deck features a grand and luxurious cruise-like experience, with vaulted, open-sea windows. Wealthy tourists often pay to experience the sights beneath the ocean. Merfolk have water chambers within the upper deck, making it additionally well suited for diplomatic missions. The lower deck features living quarters, operational and navigational centers, and storage.

The Stingray

  • Constructed similar to a stingray; flat design with an enchanted mechanical tail.
  • Is a scouting vessel designed for early threat detection. It is not designed or equipped for combat.
  • Is the second fastest submarine in the fleet after Kraken Heart.
  • Can turn very rapidly with its tail.
  • Has significant detection capabilities available on board.
    • Can detect standard communication signals up to 200 kilometers away.
    • Can detect the presence of ships, submarines, and large lifeforms up to 150 kilometers away.
    • Can detect aquatic sorcery and meaningful water disruptions from up to 150 kilometers away.
  • Can broadcast emergency signals with enhanced magic, making it more effective for relays.
