Courier's Guild

The Courier's Guild

The Courier's Guild delivers messages and parcels through Endros under the patronage of Ursula, the Goddess of the Sea. The guild employs a unique blend of traditional methods, magical practices, and partnerships with sea creatures. By maintaining neutrality in political and social affairs, couriers are permitted certain privileges, particularly in arranging safe passage and gaining access to important figures. These practices help ensure that critical transports flow unhindered.

The Courier's Guild holds a respected place in Endrosian society. Their ability to connect distant regions fosters trade, diplomacy, and cultural exchange. In some settlements, the arrival of a courier is often met with anticipation, as they bring news and a sense of connection to the wider world.

Services and Operations

  • Sea Messages (1 Pence): Fast and affordable message delivery by Ondori dolphins.
  • Land Messages (2 Pence): Land-based message delivery along established routes.
  • Ondori Parcels (5-10 Pence): Small parcels delivered quickly by Ondori dolphins, limited by weight and size.

    • The guild contracts reputable merchants with parcel permits for most land-based transport.
  • Shipping: 3 pence or more for delivering packages by ship, with final cost based on weight, size, and distance.
    • The guild contracts reputable merchants with shipping permits to handle sea-based deliveries.
  • Bird Couriers: 4 to 10 pence for fast, high-quality knowledge transfer.

Ondori Dolphin Couriers

Ondori Dolphins are tasked with the majority of high-priority message deliveries between coastal and riverside post offices. This includes messages contained by Mindshard or in watertight scroll cases secured on their pack. High priority parcels can also be attached using a latch-on watertight compartment, though are more commonly sent by ship, submarine, or caravan.

Ondori dolphins can understand the common tongue. Most Postmasters are sufficiently trained to understand their vocalizations.

Premium Ondori Services

Certain merfolk and practitioners of Water magic may be granted permission to request special services from the Ondori dolphins. They can be "summoned" to one's location with a short-range underwater broadcast, typically performed within range of a waterside post office. If an Ondori dolphin is nearby and can respond to the call, they will provide a response and appear for the request.

Once an Ondori dolphin has arrived, the individual can make use of premium services, such as direct message or parcel deliveries that bypass the usual routes. Some Ondori also offer traversal services, allowing you to ride to a new destination with their assistance.

Courier Bird

Courier Birds, which are usually Jaykings and other intelligent Fey birds, are highly valued and treated with great care due to their significance. They can follow complex instructions and provide fast, long-range, high-quality knowledge transfer. Some have Beastmastery Mindshards implanted in their forehead, enhancing their intelligence and communication even further.

Courier Birds are usually paired with Couriers that tend to them personally, and have additional housing in beautiful lofts at post offices and waystations throughout Endros. They are fed a specialized diet designed to maximize their health and flight performance.

Courier's Permit

All guild couriers carry a Courier's Permit, an official badge of the guild that has been certified by Concordia, the Goddess of Pacts. It provides several key benefits:

  • Acts as identification, proving the bearer is an authorized representative of the Courier's Guild.
  • Grants rights to safe and unobstructed passage.
  • Grants general access to important individuals, nobility, and lightly secured areas for the purposes of conducting deliveries.
  • Given priority protection status from the Adventurer's Guild, which must be officially recognized by nobility.

Couriers present the permit as needed, discouraging interference from local authorities or hostile parties, and facilitating their duties across various regions.

Guild Structure

There is a central headquarters located in Meris, and post offices at ports in every major settlement. There are also inland post offices in cities that can't reach the main network, and strategically placed waystations along major routes to provide safe havens for rest, resupply, and communication.

The guild is hierarchically organized, with two Grand Postmasters overseeing large-scale operations. Each individual post office is overseen by a standard Postmaster.

The Grand Postmaster is the highest-ranking position in the guild, an office always held by a Siren. They are based at the headquarters in Meris. They are responsible for all sea-based operations, maritime logistics and policies, sea routes, oversight of all coastal post offices, and coordination with fey sea creatures.

The Land Postmaster is a position held by a Siren using a legged form. They are responsible for large-scale oversight of land-based operations for the guild. This includes inland post offices, land couriers, inland distribution logistics and procedures, coordinating protection services with the Adventurer's Guild, and all other inland policies. Though they defer to the Grand Postmaster for certain policies, this role is indispensable for connecting inland regions to the main courier network.

Other guild positions include:

  • Postmaster: Manages the operations of a post office in a given settlement or territory.
  • Senior Courier: Experienced couriers entrusted with high-priority deliveries and training apprentices.
  • Courier: Standard couriers handling regular deliveries.
  • Apprentice Courier: New recruits undergoing training.
  • Shadowrunner: Adventurer couriers specialized in dangerous deliveries.

Guild Practices

  • Courier's Oath: All members swear to uphold the guild's principles of confidentiality, reliability, and neutrality.
  • Uniforms: Couriers wear distinctive insignia denoting their rank and guild emblem.
  • Adventurer Contracts: For certain protected services, the guild contracts adventurers to courier messages or parcels.

Uniforms

The guild's livery favors deep sea blue and teal with foam-white linings, storm-gray accents, and seal-brown leather. An emblem is worn of a silver spiral wave encircling a dolphin's fin.

Land couriers wear a thigh-length deep-blue doublet with teal piping over a split riding skirt or trousers. A mid-length teal cloak (white-lined, weighted corners, detachable hood) sheds weather, while layered harnesses and belts carry twin satchels and watertight scroll tubes.

Sea couriers wear a short teal sailor's jacket with rope-stitch seams and brass toggles over a deep-blue half-tabard: a wrap kilt or split skirt with overlapping panels. They go barefoot or wear soft deck shoes.
