The Broken Chain
Overview
The Broken Chain is a clandestine criminal enterprise dedicated to the liberation of slaves, often associated with the city of Sanctum. Their organization operates in the shadows, relying on a network of decentralized secret cells, covert operations, and the support of sympathetic individuals within positions of power. They face constant danger, as their activities are considered illegal and punishable by established territories that favor the Slave Market.
Amara, Goddess of Compassion, publicly advocates her support of the organization despite its criminal nature. Many believe that she is a major benefactor, though few understand how strained the Church's resources are. The Church has been known to feed, shelter, and overlook the presence of illegally freed slaves in defiance of the law, but does not officially offer any such services.
History
The Broken Chain was founded by a small group of abolitionists and former slaves who recognized the need for direct action against the slave trade. Its origins are shrouded in secrecy, with many of its early members adopting pseudonyms to protect themselves and their families. Despite many setbacks and losses, the organization grew with time, eventually attracting a small handful of wealthy sympathizers. The Broken Chain's early efforts focused on small-scale rescues and raising awareness, but they gradually developed more sophisticated methods.
