Bardic College
Overview
The Bardic College, headquartered in Stormcrest, is a prestigious institution founded under the inspiration of Lyra, the Goddess of Revelry. The college's grand amphitheaters, resonant concert halls, and intricate dance studios are all constructed to enhance the flow of Air Aether, with a particular emphasis on enhancing musical performances. It is devoted to the mastery of music, dance, and the performing arts, serving as a beacon for performing artists who seek to refine their craft and share their talents with the world.
While primarily an educational institution, the Bardic College wields significant cultural influence. Graduates often become renowned performers, influential courtiers, or advisors to nobility. The college also acts as a repository of history and lore, preserving the stories and songs that chronicle Gaia's past. Though it officially embraces a philosophy of neutrality, its graduates are often entangled in political affairs due to their considerable influence throughout Endros.
There is an enrollment fee of five silver per month, with many of its pupils requiring patronage from nobility to afford admission. Scholarships may be granted directly by the college for remarkable talent, but these cases are rare.
Liminal Studios
The Bardic College incorporates advanced Mindscape techniques into its curriculum through the use of special chambers known as Liminal Studios. It uses carefully simulated Mindscape environments and constructs to guide, refine, and evaluate performances. These systems provide instant, detailed feedback and challenge students' technical proficiency, creative improvisation, and stage presence. Novices and muses alike can swiftly recognize and correct subtle imperfections in their techniques.
The Starlit Rotunda
A majestic, domed edifice of soaring arches and crystalline glass, the Starlit Rotunda is the radiant heart of the Bardic College; a Wonder built with the aid of Aedron, the God of Crafting. Towering columns uphold a vast, translucent dome, through which moonlight and starlight cascade nightly upon audiences gathered below.
At the center of the venue stands a grand, circular performance stage of polished marble, encircled by tiered seating capable of accommodating upwards of two thousand attendees. Its magic is specifically designed to amplify performances with resonant clarity, ethereal acoustics, and the evocation of potent emotions. Mindscape recordings are created during legendary performances and historical events.
The Rotunda is the ultimate venue for Endros's most important concerts, theatrical performances, dance recitals, and competitions. To perform here is a high honor, signaling one's ascent within the artistic ranks. There are nightly performances by Virtuosos, Maestros, or in some cases, Lyra herself.
College Ranks
Ranks within the college are assigned in three different domains: singing, dancing, and musical instruments. However, one's title reflects the highest rank received, and it is only necessary to advance in one domain. One is considered to have more clout from receiving one "Maestro" rank than from having three "Virtuoso" ranks.
Novice:
- May be required to demonstrate basic proficiency or potential during an audition.
- Students that are still developing their skills in the performing arts.
- Have access to the college's extensive libraries and archives, including compositions.
- Focus on foundational skills, theory, and exposure to various artistic forms.
Muse:
- Must pass rigorous evaluations by a small panel of college evaluators.
- Skilled performers recognized for their talent and contribution.
- Receive training in the use and manipulation of Air Aether.
- Often specialized in specific instruments, styles, or disciplines.
- Given opportunities to perform in significant college events and public venues.
- May receive mentorship from masters and access to specialized training.
- May go on tour across Endros to gain reputation or return to their patrons to pay off tuition debts.
Virtuoso:
- Represents performance artists that have achieved mastery in their field.
- Conferred the title by consensus of the Bardic Council.
- A limited number of Virtuoso titles are given.
- There are Virtuoso titles that can be conferred: Voice, Dance, and Music.
- Often receive patronage from nobles and wealthy patrons.
- Often accept highly paid teaching roles, guiding the next generation of artists.
- Enjoy considerable freedom and influence within the college and beyond.
Maestro:
- Those who have been blessed with Lyra's Sacrament, conferred this title for extraordinary skill in the arts.
- Only one Maestro is chosen each year during the Bard's Jubilee.
- Possess a master-level understanding of their art, potentially blending magic and performance.
- May have the opportunity to be involved in college leadership, curriculum development, and significant cultural projects.
- Granted an Aethertech instrument or performance artifact as recognition of their skill.
Aethertech Artifacts
Advancement to the position of Virtuoso is accompanied by the bestowal of unique Aethertech instruments and artifacts, which are passed down through generations of savants. Any Virtuoso receiving such a historical artifact is expected to continue its legacy, to be returned to the college upon retirement. The number of Virtuoso titles available is intentionally limited to ensure that an artifact is always received.
Each domain has its own type of Air Aethertech that is granted:
- Singing: Granted an accessory that enhances vocal performances.
- Dancing: Granted a pair of magical dancing shoes that enhances dancing performances, such as by minor levitation.
- Musical Instruments: Granted a musical instrument that radiates more beautiful music.
College Hierarchy
The Bardic College is overseen by the Bardic Council, a group of Maestros and senior Virtuosos who guide the institution's direction and uphold its values.
Headmaster/Headmistress:
- The leading figure of the college, chosen by Lyra.
- Responsible for administrative decisions, external relations, and overall stewardship.
- Often a renowned artist with significant contributions to the arts.
Council of Maestros:
- Comprises a handful of Lyra's most esteemed members across various disciplines.
- Sets curriculum standards, adjudicates significant decisions, and mentors rising talents.
- Maintains relationships with external organizations, including other colleges, guilds, and noble courts.
Masters and Instructors:
- Muses and Virtuosos who take on teaching roles.
- Provide instruction, guidance, and evaluation for students.
- Engage in research, composition, or development of new artistic techniques.
Touring
A common practice is for muses to embark on a musical tour to build up a reputation for themselves. Groups of muses often join together, forming bands and performing troupes, which can make it easier to develop fame. Larger venues are more desired, but competition can be fierce; sometimes even dirty. Those with limited reputation may struggle to be permitted to play there, particularly during prime times. Many locations for touring are well-established throughout Endros, so some tours have relatively predictable routes and dates.
