Fairies
Fairies are small, winged, humanoid fey creatures standing between 8-12 inches tall, with delicate butterfly-like wings and an eternally youthful appearance. They live remarkably long lives of 200-300 years without ever visibly aging. Their memories fade faster than other races. Specific events blur after just a few years, which keeps them perpetually childlike, playful, and endlessly rediscovering the world around them.
Fairies have strong personalities, mostly childlike in nature. Many are overwhelmingly cheerful, curious, and easygoing. They approach life with infectious enthusiasm, glomp-attacking friends and engaging in endless play. While individual Fairies vary, this bubbly disposition prevails across the race. They can be mischievous, occasionally grumpy, or even unfriendly, but such moods rarely last long before their natural exuberance returns.
Origins
Fairies originate from Flutterfae; magical fey butterflies found naturally in enchanted forests and other fey-touched environments. Under rare natural circumstances in the right Aetheric conditions, a Flutterfae cocoon may spontaneously produce a Fairy instead of another butterfly. Far more commonly, a Fairy will instinctively perform a blessing ritual when they come across a Flutterfae cocoon, not realizing that their magic dramatically increases the likelihood of Fairy emergence. Fairies who awaken a cocoon are considered the "mother" of the resulting Fairy. Fairies born by chance without a mother are uncommon but not unheard of. New Fairies emerge with no memory or connection to their butterfly origins.
Fairy Tales
When asked to tell stories, a Fairy may accidentally recount something that actually happened to them long ago without any awareness they're describing real events. To Fairies, stories simply feel right or they don't, and the question of literal truth rarely occurs to them. The stories often include highly embellished narratives, filtered through whimsical interests and imagination.
Role in Society
Fairies possess an innate magical ability to sense demonic presence at considerable distances. Some can detect significant demonic activity from many kilometers away, with precision increasing significantly at closer range. This makes them extremely valuable to civilized society and to the Adventurer's Guild in particular.
The Adventurer's Guild serves as something between patron and parent to Fairy-kind. The Guild provides for Fairy needs—food, shelter, clothing, and protection—while Fairies contribute their demon-sensing abilities and aerial mobility in return. This arrangement suits Fairy nature well; they respond to the Guild's guidance much as children respond to caring parents, generally doing what they're asked because it feels right and helps people they care about. Most Fairies genuinely want to help protect others from demons, finding the work meaningful even when the details become tedious.
During demonic threats, Fairies relay communications between defensive positions and provide early warning that saves countless lives. The Adventurer's Guild recognizes Fairies as a protected race, acknowledging both their importance and their somewhat vulnerable position in the world.
Fairies and Civilization
Fairies regularly visit, live in, and play within civilized settlements. Many cities feature Fairy Huts—small communal dwellings sized for Fairy inhabitants—while remote areas might have miniature Fairy houses tucked into trees or hillsides. Though Fairies don't need money (the Guild provides for them), they eagerly spend any coins they acquire on food, clothing, accessories, tiny furniture, toys, art, and other whimsical treasures.
Citizens hold mixed feelings about Fairies. Most acknowledge their vital role in demon defense and find their enthusiasm charming in moderation. However, Fairies have a cultural weakness for tasty food and often don't respect boundaries when humans are trying to eat in peace. A Fairy spotting an interesting meal may hover close, ask endless questions, request bites, or simply help themselves if not watched carefully. Some establishments offer complimentary Fairy food funded by the Adventurer's Guild to keep them occupied, while others post signs discouraging patrons from feeding Fairies to prevent congregations of hopeful beggars.
Children and Fairies get along exceptionally well, sharing similar energy levels and approaches to play. They are frequently seen together in parks and yards, and several children's sports have been designed specifically to include Fairy participants.
Additional Notes
Sutra, Goddess of the Weave, obsessively adores Fairies. Fairies can regularly be found at her place of work. Sutra's workspace is lined with shelving filled with Fairy-sized dolls, each adorned with beautiful Fairy outfits crafted with top-of-the-line alchemical silks. All Fairies are equipped with Sutra's enchanted outfits, which are self-cleaning, self-repairing, temperature-regulating, and waterproof.
Many Fairies are obsessed with or at least adore Lyra, Goddess of Revelry, with passionate and slightly overwhelming devotion. They speak of her constantly: her music, her festivals, her beauty, her latest performances, and more. Often to the exasperation of anyone who cannot escape the conversation. During Lyra's festivals, Fairies gather in extraordinary numbers, creating miniature celebrations within the larger revelry. Many serve roles during these events as messengers, decorators, and performers. The connection runs deep; Lyra's domains of joy, creativity, and spontaneous celebration mirror Fairy nature so closely that devotion feels less like worship and more like recognition of kinship.
