Dwarves
Dwarves are short, lithe mountainfolk with dense-boned features, strong constitutions, and lifespans slightly shorter than Humans. Their stature makes them well suited to tunnels, workshops, machinery, and dense subterranean cities, while their endurance and precision make them exceptional artisans, engineers, miners, and artificers.
Dwarves are strongly associated with Aedron, God of Crafting, whose work, standards, and severity have shaped their culture for centuries. They are famous for masonry, blacksmithing, mineral work, Aethertech, fortifications, and infrastructure that can endure for generations. Their greatest historical works include the Great Wall, the Underwards, the Onyx Magtrain Network, and many of the reinforced structures that allow Endros to survive.
Culture and Reputation
Dwarven culture treats skill, dedication, reliability, and the quality of one's finished craft as more important than birth or charm. Wealth brings status when it was earned through useful skill, successful enterprise, and proven contribution. Buying noble title without holding a respected corporate or mastercraft position is considered bad form.
Dwarves tend to be loyal to their own kind and can be rough with outsiders, though not usually cruel. Their warriors are especially zealous in defense of each other, their homes, and their corporate holdings. Adventuring is respected in Dwarven society, much as it is among Humans, and is critical for their dangerous routes and mines where demonic influence has emerged.
Corporations
Dwarven strongholds are organized around corporations more than traditional government. Most Dwarves follow the laws and expectations of the corporation they work for, and corporate rank often functions as social rank. Corporations specialize in particular fields, compete to be the best, and reward those who climb through merit, technical excellence, and practical value.
In Onyx, Aedron remains the de facto authority, but delegates power to the corporations most valuable to him. These corporations receive influence according to his favor, and Dwarves compete for status by becoming master artisans, senior Factors, corporate executives, or indispensable specialists. Factors serve as corporate representatives, technical liaisons, operations commanders, and problem-solvers, bridging craft, politics, contracts, and logistics.
Aethertech and Craft
Aethertech is the core of modern Dwarven power. Most Aethertech is created by Dwarven corporations that control the mines, facilities, and distribution networks required for production.
Dwarves particularly excel at Geo Sorcery. Earthtech was one of the earliest and most important branches of Aethertech. Their settlements are filled with machinery, assembly lines, and automated systems that touch nearly every facet of daily life. Dwarven architecture is expected to be both functional and beautiful, preserving near-perfect quality for centuries when properly maintained.
Onyx and the Underwards
Onyx is the heart of Dwarven civilization: the greatest center of Aethertech and the home of Aedron's Forgeheart. It descends through vast subterranean levels and fortified enclaves, each designed as a self-sustaining urban center.
The Underwards are the broader expression of Dwarven civilization beyond Onyx. Built beneath major settlements, they harness Aether to subterranean industry and travel. Some have integrated Aquatic Tunnel Networks and Undertide districts through cooperation with Merfolk corporations.
Relationship with Kobolds
Dwarven communities often include significant Kobold populations, especially Earth Kobolds drawn to mountain strongholds and Geo-rich environments. Dwarven cities are among the safer places for Kobolds to live, with more cultural protections than many surface communities. Kobolds are well suited to many forms of labor that suit Dwarven industry, with others favoring domestic service or magical assistance.
Defense
Dwarven mountain strongholds are among the most fortified places in Endros, though demonic warrens still emerge through their vast network of mines and tunnel systems. The deepest levels increase in danger due to the growing presence of the Feyweave and chaotic Aether. Their industrial operations and demand for rare materials keeps their adventuring parties highly occupied.
