Faiths

Faiths

There are many faiths in Endros; ranging from small, informal circles with little backing to sprawling institutions that wield significant influence. The majority of citizens participate in religious activities due to its importance in generating Prana for the survival of Endros against the demonic hordes. However, each faith offers different values, philosophical interpretations, communities, and comforts to their followers.

Pantheon

Pantheon worship honors the entire Pantheon of Gods rather than centering devotion on one deity. It often overlaps with the major faiths, especially those that worship the Gods directly. Pantheon worshippers may still favor certain Gods over others, but it is common for them to participate in services outside their primary area of devotion. Most citizens practice this casually to some degree.

Shrines and chapels are typically the fruits of individual patronage, dotting remote hamlets or tucked away in bustling urban corners. Clothing aesthetics vary widely, usually borrowing from the patron's preferred faith or local custom.

Church of Amara

  • Amara herself does not seek worship, but recognizes its benefit for spreading Prana.
  • Most widespread religion in Endros.
  • Priests are taught to lead by example and dedicate their lives to serving others.
  • Emphasizes compassion, healing, empathy, charity, community service, selflessness.
  • Actively fosters strong community bonds and social cohesion.
  • During times of crisis, acts as a unifying force, mobilizing resources and volunteers to aid the population.

Despite the Church's agnostic approach and desire to accommodate all faiths, Sanctuaries exist almost solely because of Amara, the Goddess of Compassion. Her anointed Saints are responsible for overseeing the Church, and are stationed at every major Sanctuary across Endros. Their powers of healing and compassion are too profound not to be felt by the community.

Church of Aedron

Aedron's reach is felt strongly among the Dwarves. His worship is practically woven into the fabric of subterranean life. Countless statues, chapels, shrines, and forges bearing his emblem. Artisans and craftsmen invoke his name as they labor over their creations, believing that every spark at the anvil carries a bit of divine inspiration. His worship possesses an air of formality and deep tradition that echoes through the tunnels of Endros.

The Dragon Gods

The Dragon Gods stand apart from the other Gods with draconic forms, elemental Aetheric prowess, and devastating raw power. There are countless shrines dedicated to the Dragon Gods throughout Endros, with a substantial following. While there are individual faiths for each of the Dragon Gods, some choose to more generally worship each of them; though preferences may endure.

Lexica

As the leader of the Adventurer's Guild, Archivist's Guild, and Arcan Academy, Lexica receives considerable attention as a savior of humanity and a beacon of wisdom, especially in Arcanus where her presence is strongly felt. Many intellectuals are drawn to her embodiment of knowledge, believing that her guidance unlocks the mysteries of both past lore and future potential.

Concordia

Particularly celebrated in Skywood, Concordia is often seen as the guardian of societal order. She is venerated for ensuring that every promise and contract holds the weight of destiny. Her Maidens, widely respected and beloved, act as living symbols of her power. Believers see her as vital to the stability of Endros; each carefully negotiated pact and every measured act of retribution ultimately serves the realm.

Gaia

Some find their devotion in Sylvara and Terra, the Elemental Dragons of Nature and Earth. Devotees drawn to Sylvara—often druids and nature sorcerers—celebrate the untamed wilderness and the life-force that blossoms in every corner of Gaia. Meanwhile, Terra's followers honor her as the steadfast guardian of wealth and bounty, both figuratively and literally hidden beneath the surface.

The Sea

Followers dedicated to the faiths of the sea revere both Nautilus and Ursula for their dominion over the waters, which humanity's survival has depended upon. Nautilus is admired for his unmatched wrath against demonic incursions. Ursula, the matriarch of sea life, proves vital in maintaining the balance of life beneath the waves.

Thanatos

Though Thanatos did not remain in Endros for long, his presence was profoundly impactful on all religion. People widely accept Thanatos's message that souls pass through a spiritual veil after death. Even those that do not worship him directly recognize that his favor may be of great benefit in death. Extremists may take this to mean that one should worship the act of death or killing itself, though most religious scholars would agree that Thanatos never encouraged such beliefs.

Lyra

Although rarely the primary devotion for any single believer, the open faith of Lyra is omnipresent in the cultural tapestry of Endros. Celebrated as a symbol of passion, creativity, and joyous revelry, Lyra's influence mirrors that of a beloved celebrity—ever inspiring and uplifting. Her songs, dances, and festivals infuse life with color and rhythm, reminding all that even in a world shaped by divine conflict, there remains room for celebration, artistry, and communal joy.

Valkyrie

Followers revere Valkyrie, the Goddess of Battle, and to a lesser degree the other Gods facing off against the demonic forces. The church is not well organized, and lacks the resources and political power of larger religions. However, its influence is felt throughout Orckin colonies in warrior circles, mercenary groups, and adventuring parties; particularly among the highly ranked.

The only sacred site recognized is the Hall of Legends; a large hall in the War Temple dedicated to legendary Exalted and Titans. The seven legendary warriors who have managed to defeat Valkyrie in a solo duel are honored with majestic, life-sized marble statues, equipped with non-magical replications of the armor and weapons they used.

Artemis

A simple, low-key faith that reveres Artemis, the God of Hunting. Artemis has stated that he grants favor to those who fight the demonic threats, leading to strong support from adventurers that seek to secure their exalted status in the afterlife.

Artemis is often viewed as the true iconic figure of the Adventurer's Guild - more so than Lexica, Goddess of the Mind, despite her status as Guildmaster.

The Church of Nautilus

The Church of Nautilus is a fairly widespread faith dedicated to Nautilus, the Dragon God of Water, responsible for the death of more demons than any other God. It attracts many followers among coastal settlements and Merfolk communities where Nautilus's presence is most felt, especially navy soldiers that experience the demonic horrors of the sea.

Followers believe that one should relentlessly pursue self-empowerment, whether physical, intellectual, or social. They are taught to secure an exalted status in the afterlife by protecting their domain and serving a cause that is greater than themselves. It is heresy to be complacent or hinder others' pursuit of power without just cause.

Practices and Holy Sites: Temples for Nautilus are stone chapels constructed underwater, or along shorelines of coastal settlements where they are partially enveloped by water.

The most sacred site is the Chasm of Dominion, a deep ocean trench in the Northern Gulf where Nautilus often dwells. Pilgrimages to the chasm are perilous journeys that often involve dangerous dives and potential confrontations with demonic entities or formidable sea creatures. For one to become a priest formally by the Church of Nautilus, they must dive to the pit of the Chasm of Dominion and retrieve rare alchemical liquids that form in Nautilus's presence and pool on the ocean floor below. This task requires considerable affinity with water, making it nearly exclusive to Merfolk and other aquatic races.

Nautilus has been known to observe the trial, protecting would-be priests from demonic threats they could not hope to handle on their own. It is known that Nautilus will spare priests when looking for something to eat, which is particularly useful to magical Merfolk that seek safe passage through his vast territories.

The Offering of the Tide is a practice where seafarers present offerings to Nautilus when he appears nearby. They cast their offering into the sea, seeking her blessing of safe passage and success in their endeavors. Even the other Gods tend to respect this practice when traveling by sea, acknowledging the potential retribution if their tribute is deemed unworthy.
